Evaluation

Morning Show on 5th November 2010

Immediately it is noticeable that we were under prepared. Even though we had lots of practices, and everybody had their specific job, on the morning of the show complications were risen which added extra pressure. Problems such as changing the play list and the presenter not wanting to present, this caused friction between the group before broadcasting. However once on air we didn’t follow the codes and conventions of radio programs as the mixer forgot to play sound beds when talking, which created an immediate unprofessional feel along with cutting songs off midway.
The introduction created to open Jon’s show wasn’t played therefore the audience wouldn’t know who the presenters were, however he decided to play a three minute song before introducing himself and his guests, doing this immediately put us off schedule.
Jon being the presenter should have worn his headphones so he could hear exactly what was being broadcasted but didn’t, this could have solved the smaller problems if he had been more focused.
During most morning shows there is large percentage of talking compared to music, and I feel the topics we chose to talk about were up to date and the facts of the topic were given before the opinions on the subject, however with four guests and a big character as presenter it meant that they were talking over each other and getting louder, which would confuse the audience and not been appropriate for the morning time.
Also there was a few times were a pause would happen for longer than 3 seconds which is the biggest mistake you can make in radio as the audience instantly feel there is a problem and could lose interest, however this was caused by a faulty wire but could have been prevented by putting all the songs onto Myriad.
When the music resumes there is still technical difficulties which cause the song to be broadcasted at midway through, this is very unprofessional.
The features were played at their scheduled time and were very helpful as the pre recorded 9 minute quiz gave us a chance to get on our feet and hopefully give a more professional feel, also the 15minute dedicated to Children in Need was a success as most of it was features with a short input from the presenters.
We had decided that we would have two types of news a short one at quarter past and quarter to and then a longer more detailed one at half past. The program does contain a short and long news however they aren’t played at the specific time they should have been, this is one of my jobs however I didn’t fill the duty as we were all very under prepared. Before Nathan would read the news on each occasion we had developed a introduction for him which would allow the audience to know that the news was next, besides this the presenter decided not to play it and instead introduce him.
We had decided to make the presenter as more of a character, even though this would create a distance between the audience and the presenter it could be seen as more fun, so we thought putting a character on would be exciting quite similar to Westwood, who’s character is exaggerated and has a strong personality aswell as beliefs, however our character Boris came off as quite rude, thinking he was better than others. Some things that he would say such as “Next song is catch the train with Soul Sister” this is incorrect information as it is just Train by Soul Sister however he felt the need to add which I felt unnecessary and that our target audience wouldn’t appreciate.
I felt our radio program was not a success, as the level of professionalism was minimal and that if we worked as a team better then we could have has a successful show, I do feel the features were well received as a lot of work went into them especially with changing the levels on volume as some were originally too quiet.

Audience Research

Questionnaire

1) What is your age range?
2) What Gender are you?
3) How often do you listen to the radio?
4) Where do you listen to the radio?
5) What time of day do you usually listen to it?
6. A) In the Morning what type of music would you want to hear?
b) In the morning would you want travel and news updates every minutes?
7) in the afternoon would you prefer to have a mixture of all genres?
8) Where you would prefer to have more features played?
9) What sort of music do you like listening to on the radio?
10) Do you like to hear regular news and travel updates?
11) Would you like to participate in games on the radio?
12) How do you usually participate in Children In Need?
13) What sort of content would you like to hear from the radio to raise money for Children In Need?

From this questionnaire we hope to learn what our audience wants from our radio shows and why, we feel these questions cover all of the topics and will provide the information needed to create a successful show.

Results
1. This isnt helpful information because the informationw e recieved was from the small sample of people we asked who majority were at college. To make this information more useful we could have asked a larger wider range of people and then separated the questionnaires into what age felt what, to help us understand our target audiences.

Understanding where our audiences listen to radio enables us to understand our audiences better as this shows how much they are most likely concentrating. Also its helpful for us to know what type of news and if travel updates are appropriate for our target audience, as this graph could have shown that most dont use a car.

This information is vital for learning about your target audience, I think we could have got more relaible results by seperating our information into what ages liked what as then we could have broken down our target audiecne so we knew exactly what they wanted, however the information we got still is useful. especially the music types because we had already deciding to do a mix style of genres for the afternoon show but not knowing which particular genres to include, from this questionnaire we know.

Focus Group
We held a focus group on the 1st October with a handful of our target audiences, with mixed music styles and showed them a program similar to ours we chose Radio 1's Morning Show with Chris Moyles, we chose this program because our morning show is aimed at the same audience and we felt that this would provide the best base to compare what we hope our morning show can be. Also we let them listen to clips from rehearsals of morning show and afternoon, we explained that we hope to use their information and feedback to make our radio show more professional, along with individually letting them listen to our features, with this we had one on one so we could note down their reactions to the features. Finally we asked for their opinions on our draft playlist and set order.
Radio 1 feedback - "interesting topics", "fun games", "too much talk" these are a few quotes from the feedback we got, this information was helpful because it allowed us to create our radio show for what they wanted and most agreed there was too much talking we may decide to get a few topics but play more songs. From this we also learnt that our target audience enjoyed Radio 1's variety of music.
Our Shows feedback -"technically flawed" We expected a comment like this because are first shows are only rehearsals where we are getting used to the equipment however this reinforces the point that planning and rehearsals are neccessary. "enjoyed the range of music", "I understand the angle they are coming from" comments such as these help boosted our confidence and also helped us see that our target audience understand our radio show. Also during the clip of our morning show Jon has developed the idea of a creating a character called Boris, as a group we felt it was too much character in the morning but as the idea was unusual we would let our audience decide- “Jon talks like he is a lot older, his language is a mega contrast to Kris who seems quite chavy” and “presenter seemed different and he should be more original.” I think the person was just trying to put it politely but wanted to bring it to our attention that its quite unnecessary for the morning. Also during the focus group it was mentioned that it was hard to relate the shows as one company and therefore we needed to do something to let audiences know so we could make two features that tie in with each other.
Features feedback - whilst noting down their reactions to our features I noticed that most participated in the Quick Fire Game “I felt the quickfire round ended too soon but I joined in and had a laugh”, we can easily solve this by adding another round in, we felt it was more important that the game didnt go on for too long. Also comments such as “the quick fire I will introduce to my mates, it would be well funny.”is very satisfying as it shows we know our audience and what they might like.
Playlists- “they seem appropriate for time of day but the morning only has 6 songs in a hour!” after listening to other hour long shows we realised there was more talking than songs so we decided to follow this convention but through this focus group we learnt that they prefer more music.
"I like the idea of the news being every 15minutes as long as its not really long news cos that’s boring” we decided that at quarter to and quarter past we would have short news with quickly sums up and then at the half hour we would have the deatiled news because its a code and convention of morning shows to update news and travel every 15minutes, but that our target audience only want the basic.
“I really love the variety of bands in the afternoon show, I could sit with my friends who have different tastes and all enjoy it.” This was the point of our afternoon show, and its nice to know that from our focus group we learnt that trying to aim at a varity of genres is atainable.

Why Jon & Kris?

Why Jon in the morning?
Jon has created a personality which he plays in the morning called Boris.
Originally he wanted to create a large over exaggerating character who was obsessed with buses, however this character we felt would be too over powering and most likely annoy listeners. However we have suited the character to the genre of music and time of day, such as his mode of address and the use of voice. He has quite a melodic voice and speaks with a calm steady space which is appropriate for morning, also Jon is a quick thinker and able to react on impulse this is helpful when a problem might occur and we need to cover it up.
However I do feel Jon’s sense of humour isn’t always appropriate and therefore we will draft script him so that he knows what to say but can also add his own personal input to a conversation.
Jon is able to play with the pitch of his voice, however he tends to keep a clear monotone voice for most of it, but especially when talking to guests he shows his over excitement by speeding up the pace he talks and raising his voice to a near shout. He tends to use upward inflexion to provoke our guests into thinking for them selfs. We chose to give him guests because his voice can sometimes become dull, but the excitement shines through his voice very well and this makes it more interesting to listen to.

Why Kris in the afternoon?
Kris is simply being himself, his normal personality is chatty and he talks very fast with a common accent, he can experiment with his voice to make it interesting however he does it to add in comical effect. Kris is a presenter that we feel can relate to the audience we hope to attract in the afternoon. However there is a contrast between him and the music, because we wanted to a range of genres and contrast hip hop with indie but Kris’ style is drum n base mixed with hip hop. So we have taken a risk using him as the main presenter.
But I do feel it will be a success because of his personality being so diverse and his ability to rap and talk very fast mixed in with his style of presenting and variety of music hopefully should create a lively show.
The pitch of Kris's voice is quite deep, however he speeds the pace of it up very fast and is really playful with the projection of his voice, I think this is an amzing quality to be able to do. The correct space we are supposed to present on the radio is 3 words a second however I feel Kris talks quicker than this but because of our target audience being teenagers, I feel whatever speed Kris feels natural our audience will understand and therefore be intrigued to continue to listen.

I feel both presenters are well suited to their show, and will individualy have a succesful show.

Soundbeds
Does it offend you yeah? - We are Rockstars
Prodigy- Invaders Must Die

Our station is named Phresh Fm which is a play on words from Fresh and I feel it is appropriate to both morning show and afternoon even though we have targeted two very different audiences. For the morning show fresh could mean 'wake up and feel clean and fresh', 'fresh day' and has lots of associations with feeling fresh therefore the genre we have gone for is very relaxed and compared to the afternoon show where we have taken a different angle where are presenters call it Fresh Music so with this playlist we have tried to make it new songs.
However from our audience research we learnt that there is a large variety in what genre our target audience wanted to listen to so we have a wide selection of music, with indie, club, dance and rap.
Also we have made sound beds which compliment our Phresh style and these also enhance the professionalism of our radio shows.
However in our fifteen minutes dedicated to Children in Need we decided to play the last five years Children in Need songs but after asking our target audience about the songs we realised that they were no longer popular as individual songs and decided that we should mix them together to create a quite comical and usual mix, this way the audience can hear snippets of old songs and instantly remember them and these songs are associated with Children In Need.
As a group we carefully decided the order of the songs and what should follow certain features, such as the children in need, we wouldn't want to follow the sad features with a inappropriate song as this would deem us as disrespectful.
We play our 4 sec bumper regularly to remind audiences what they are listening to and as its only 4 seconds audiences will be able to remember it and it can become an ident to our show.
Also the bumpers are situated before and after studio conversations as most professional radio stations do this however with the quick introductions to the next song we haven't played it as then we feel its enforcing it too much and by repeating it a lot the "light hearted, friendship" kind of style that the presenters do toward the audience is lost.
The Topics will be decided the day before we broadcast so that they are relevant to current affairs and Kris the presenter for the afternoon show will chose which order to talk about the topics in depending on how the conversation and show is flowing, also if we have a technical problem we have short lighthearted topics to give the mixer time to sort the problem out.
Also the topics will be relevant to the 30 minute news which will be broadcasted at half way through our radio program to show the high level of our professionalism.
The Features we have created relate to the features in the morning show and games such as "wheres Kris" and "wheres Jon" are the same game but for the different presenters with different locations however the sound bed and sound effects are the same both games as we would like audience to recognize that we are one station with two programs even though the target audiences are very different. Also we have two feature that are similar but we have decided to put the live one called Quick Fire Round into the afternoon show as audiences would be able to join in and have a laugh with and at our presenters, we have decided to put the pre recorded quiz which lasts 9 minute 40 in the morning because Jon presents the morning show and as we decided before we recorded it that it would be more suitable for the morning he also is quiz master to keep up continuity.

Wednesday 20 October 2010

Ideas for features and content on Breakfast Show.

In our first group meeting we came up with names for shows, features and content.
along with who should present, how we would incorporate Children In Need and how we wanted our audience to feel after our show.

We felt our morning show needed lively, ambitious presenters who would wake up their listener and keep them amused. So we decided that Jon and Brett would be a good combination as they both bring a different element to presenting and their difference in personalities along with their different voices. Jon is able to play with his voice and easily put on accents and tones which makes him interesting to listen to where Brett is very relatable to other people and his voice is quite husky and has a welcoming tone to it which is very nice for the morning such as other presenters like Chris Moyles who have a deep melodic voice.
We also felt that similar to other morning radio shows such as Touch Fm it would be a good idea to have a short news every fifteen minutes to keep our listeners up to date as in the morning people are traveling to school and work and by playing the news every fifteen minutes are most likely to catch it. Also we drafted some ideas for features, such as a pre-recorded quiz, where we could add in sound effects (buzzers) to make the show more audio challenged, also a game where a short clip of a song is played backwards and the audience can get in contact with what they think it is. However we want to raise money and awareness about Children in Need so games, features would be a professional way to incorporate this charity, such as poke the presenter, where we have a giant finger and on the live streaming the audience can watch them get poked all the have to do is donate a small amount, however how would we know? and also this idea seemed quite boring so we have decided it might be a good idea to dedicate 15minutes of both of our shows to Children in Need, where we have a short documentary type feature about a child involved Children in Need along with something lighthearted such as the top 5 previous years number one Children in Need songs. Also our presenters could talk about the charity and we could do an interview with someone involved with Stratford College Does Children In Need.

Features
Guess That Tune - created by myself, Gemma and Jamie. We felt this idea incorporates music and a feature and we are able to make it appropriate to Children In Need and we can make it more professional by adding in sound effects. Also Guess That Tune is a short 1 minute feature which allows the show not to fall into a boring repetative fashion where tehf eatures are several minutes long. This is a short fresh feature suitable to our radio station.
Pre Recorded Quiz- involves almost everyone in our group and everyone was involved with the production. The questions were researched and wanted to be a variety of topics and different styles of questions, such as backward spelling bees and trick questions. This feature is over 9minutes long and we decided to use it in the morning show because Jon who is presenting the morning show is the quiz master and it will help wake our audiences up.
Wheres kris- Our morning show and afternoon both follow opposite styles and are aimed at different audiences however we plan to tie our programs together by switching two features around which follow the same style called "wheres jon?" and "wheres kris?". In the morning show unless we changed the title to "where has jon been?" it would look unprofessional for him to be in the studio guessing where he was when the feature is about him, so we decided to put "wheres Kris?" into Jons show therefore showing the audience we are one radio station. the game is very simple and as its all pre-recorded we were able to attach a soundbed to the feature whilst the game is being played and therfore adds professionalism to our program.
Children In Need- We have threefeatures about Children in Need, one is about a girl in hospital with Cancer, I recorded her off the internet and added it together with Gemma also I added an echo effect onto Gemmas voice as it sounds less hard and the angle of the feature is to give our audience a sudden hit back to reality that this kind is continuing in the world, however we didnt want to make it long winded so its only a minute long but very hard hitting. Along with this feature we have a very lighthearted slightly commical feature involving the last 5years Number one hits of Children In Need all pushed together into a 3 minute song, as when we researched the song and discovered what music it was we realised it was very outdated and that our audience wouldnt want to listen to all of these songs. So instead we cut them all together and let one song finish off the lyric of another which makes sentences that make no sense.
We have finished off our 15minutes of Children In Need with an interview with Andy Tyres, we did want this to be live however Andy is a busy man and we decided it would be much easier to have a prerecorded interview with him, also the interviewee is Gemma because during our focus group we had people say that there was alot of men in our shows.
News every 15 minutes - it is a code and convention for breakfast shows to have a 15minute travel and news update, we have decided that at quarter past and quarter to we shall have a short 1 minute news update but that at half hour it will be a full detailed news report by an outsider co-presenter such as News Beat on Radio 1.

Children In Need History and Ideas on features and content for show

Top 5 Children In Need Songs
2004 Girls Aloud I'll Stand By You
2005 Liberty X A Night to Remember
2006 Emma Bunton Downtown
2007 Spice Girls Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)
2008 McFly Do Ya/Stay With Me
2009 Peter Kay's Animated All Star Band The Official BBC Children in Need Medley
2010 JLS Love You More

These were the top 5 songs from the last 5 years.
We are dedicating a section of our show to Children In Need, playing a feature to raise awareness of the charity and a guest who is raising money for CIN being interviewed by our presenters.
Due to these songs being old and quite unpopular we have decided not to play each of them but instead create a feature where we play them and cut at a time where the lyrics will fit into the next song to add slight humour. This will remind the audience of the songs associated with Children In Need along with the extra level of light hearted genre that Children In Need follows.

Who is the money going to?
Young and disadvantaged kids all over the UK.
665 projects, money split between them.
2009 Money Raised?
£39 Million

One PROJECT, I focussed on was the Alder Hey Hospital Project for Kids Cancer.
Ellie a six year old girl, went to Alder Hey Hosiptal to have Chemotherapy, the hospital and its doctors are helping all kids to recieve treatment and get better however being in hospital it can be very distressing for children and Children In Need have raised money to help the kids get through this horrific experience by trying to keep their spirits up and forget about their illness helping them to act like the young carefree children they should be. last year they were given seven grand to turn their drawings of superheros into a animated character. However only twenty of the thousands of kids involved in Alder Hey Hospital were able to use the equipment and hopefully with the support of the the public this year more can be raised to help these children in different ways.

(Turn This Into A Script For Feature on Children in Need.)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/aboutus/whoyouvehelped.shtml#appeal_video_85
beginning of the video is about Ellie and she explains to the audience about her ilness and the hospital , so I would like to include this in the feature so its more realistic to the listener that a child is in need.

Ellie : My name is Ellie and I'm six. I came to Alder Hey for Chemotherapy in March and I'm getting better. The doctors checked my lungs so I didnt get no more if I get more Ill get ill again and that wont be very nice.
Voice Over: Last year your money helped children like Ellie forget about their illness and make them feel young and carefree again. Children in Need gave Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool seven thousand pounds to turn 20 children such as Ellie, dreams into reality by giving them opportunity to make their drawings into animated characters and gave them the chance to learn a new hobby whilst battling horrific illnesses. This year we want all of the children to have their dream become a reality just like Ellie so please donate this year and make a difference to a childs life.

This was made into a feature and will be displayed on our radio shows in the fifteen minute interval dedicated to Children In Need.

Interview to our Guest:
we want the guest we chose to feel welcome and want them to divulge information about the topic whilst keeping it light hearted.
we hope to interview Andy Tyres, Sophie or Phil about the Children in Need production on he friday, wanting our audience to know what they will expect from the show and how they plan on raising money.
